Artist Statement
I find difficulty in expressing emotions through words. I instead find myself channeling these feelings into the things I create. These illustrative prints
utilize subconscious associations with natural symbols, such as plants and animals, to evoke the feelings experienced when creating each piece in this
series of prints. Through an intuitive approach to image making, I allow flexibility and spontaneity into the piece; each mark carved informing the next. In my
choice of subject matter, I reflect on my relationship to nature and death, while referencing symbolic associations to the animals I'm portraying. What
animals are considered omens of death, and how are these beliefs shaped by cultural contexts, including religious frameworks with their enduring
influence on art? Why does death elicit such discomfort, and how does this detachment from nature manifest in society and contemporary art?
These works serve as a source of relief and introspection while inviting the viewer to contemplate each piece’s meaning and to create meaning of their own in response.
