Bio

Penny Dobson is a mixed media artist from Tuscaloosa, AL. Prior to moving to Alabama 4 years ago, she lived in north Georgia where she taught high school art and pottery for 27 years. She is the mother of two humans and 4 pets. Penny married her husband, Johnnie, 26 years ago. They were married by the folk artist, Howard Finster. Johnnie inspired Penny to become an art teacher and encouraged her to be an artist. She began her career by producing Folk Art influenced work. These works included drawing on cow bones, painting happy paintings, and making pottery. She then focused solely on pottery and created hand-built face vases and whimsical animals. Her work has evolved through the years. One day, she saw a vintage twin bell alarm clock in an antique mall and loved the look of it. She showed it to Johnnie and asked if he thought she could paint on it. Would people buy it? She sold it immediately. Now, almost nothing is off limits when becoming part of her work. Penny also enjoys making frames for her work by piecing together salvaged wood. Penny considers the frames to be as much art as the paintings.
