Artist Statement
My work offers a multidimensional exploration of spirituality, cultural, and social issues, with an emphasis on fostering understanding and resolution. Each piece is shaped by its narrative, with colored themes and assemblages that convey specific emotions and stories.
A significant feature of my art is the inclusion of dimensional handwritten scriptures from the Bible. These scriptures, rendered in a curvy pattern with 3-D paint, form the foundation of many of my works. Accompanying the text are defined figurative images and mixed media elements, painted with acrylic on abstractly constructed canvases and wood.
Acrylic is my preferred medium due to its versatility and vibrant color range. I utilize it to build layers, create textures, and bring depth to my pieces. My techniques include glazing, impasto, and washes, each adding a unique dimension to the work. The fast-drying nature of acrylic allows me to work spontaneously, capturing the immediacy of my inspiration.
In addition to acrylic, I experiment with a diverse range of materials to enrich my work. Coffee provides a unique, earthy hue and texture, adding warmth and a sense of organic authenticity to my pieces. Charcoal is used to create bold, expressive lines and deep contrasts, enhancing the visual impact and emotional depth.
Non-traditional surfaces and materials play a crucial role in my art. Wood offers a sturdy, textured base that complements my themes of resilience and natural beauty. Glass and plastic bring a modern, reflective quality, allowing light to interact dynamically with the artwork. These materials often symbolize transparency and transformation in my narratives.
Fabric is another integral component, adding softness and tactile variation. By incorporating fabric, I weave layers of history and culture into my work, creating a rich tapestry of visual and material complexity. Found objects and recycled materials are frequently used, underscoring my commitment to sustainability and innovation in art. By re-purposing these elements, I create art that is not only visually striking but also environmentally conscious.
My creative process involves meticulous planning and spontaneous expression. I start with a clear vision and often a detailed sketch, but I remain open to the organic evolution of each piece. The integration of mixed media elements such as fabric, metal, and paper adds complexity and richness, making each artwork a tactile and visual experience.
The results are intentional, emotion-laced pieces that reflect my interpreted illustrations of written scripture from divine inspiration. Through these creative expressions, I aim to engage viewers, inviting them to contemplate the underlying messages and find their own understanding and resolutions. My art serves as a bridge, connecting personal faith with broader cultural and social dialogues.
By exploring these themes and employing a variety of techniques and materials, I hope to create work that is not only aesthetically compelling but also deeply meaningful and thought-provoking.
