JAY CRUM
I find beauty in complexity. Travelling to new cities and exploring has been a long-standing source of inspiration for me. Wandering through unfamiliar streets that seem like mazes, I am overcome with curiosity and an urge to draw. My favorite subjects are always bustling places where one can get lost, such as crowded marketplaces or cross-sections of ships. Drawing without a preconceived skitch also feels like embarking on a new journey.
In this particular project, I am experimenting with my line drawings by adding randomness and rhythm to them. To achieve this, I switch color pencils after a specific amount of marks. I consider this as a collaboration between my left and right brain. Additionally, I have been exploring the technique of collage where I combine drawings done at different times, and then playfully arrange them into new combinations. These techniques have cross-pollinated and informed on another, resulting in patterns that emerge like a sense of deja vu. My ultimate goal is to evoke the same sense of adventure and curiosity in the viewer that I experience during the creation of these works.
