Alex Green has developed his practice using a multidisciplinary perspective to create work that highlights the ecologies and queer existence of the Deep South. Growing up in an unincorporated community in rural Alabama, Alex’s work is inspired by his experience growing up as LGBTQ+ in the rugged landscape of the American south. The work exhibited, part of a series titled The Cumberland Plateau, feature video, animation, painting, and collage. The Cumberland Plateau is a broad level of elevated located in the southern part of the Appalachians; the area is distinguished by a unique biological decadence and political marginalization of queer folk. Utilizing elements such as discarded magazines, iPhone footage, and acrylic paint – each piece is an homage to the landscapes that Alex has spent his life admiring and navigating. The series connects and questions the irrational disregard for both queer and ecosystem prosperity in the American Deep South.
